Carpenters work closely with project managers, designers and clients. They should be proficient in measuring, cutting, shaping, and assembling wood and other materials to produce functional and aesthetically pleasing structures. Carpenters are responsible for reading and interpreting plans, all phases of carpentry, insulation, drywall work, painting and finishing, tile work, roofing, siding and trim. This role requires three to five years of work-related experience.
General Responsibilities
When designated to do so by the Project Manager, Carpenters supervise laborers in activities to which they are assigned.
Safety is of the upmost importance. Carpenters are expected to be safety minded and must learn the safety practices of this company and adhere to them.
Carpenters must keep track of their hours and the job sites those hours are applied to each day in order to fill in time sheets correctly before each pay period.
At times, Carpenters are asked to work independently. This will require attention to detail, quality and an ability to stay on task.
In the absence of the Project Manager, due to illness or attending to other responsibilities, Carpenters are responsible for seeing that other field laborers remain on task and are productive. At times, this will mean assigning new tasks in the flow of work.
Track inventory of job site materials at the beginning, during and end of each job. When items need to be restocked, take action to be sure they are there when needed.
Job-Site Supervision & Customer Satisfaction
Arrive on the job before 8:00 a.m. to allow for setup and remain on the job until 4:30 p.m.
Take a half-hour lunch and breaks as directed by your Project Manager to ensure a safe job site.
Create a working environment that brings the best out in other employees and that uses time as efficiently as possible.
Install all dust, safety and security protections before any work is started on the project.
Enforce all company policies regarding safety, foul language, drugs, drinking and smoking. If someone continues to violate these policies, it is your responsibility to report them to your Project Manager.
Enforce all company safety policies and provide safe conditions for both workers and clients.
Do not perform any work not in the contract unless authorized by a signed Change Order and directed by the Project Manager.
At the request of the Project Manager unlock the job site at the beginning of each day and secure the property at the end of the day.
Protect the client's property from theft, damage or weather-related loss.
Protect any items that will be reused or cannot be removed from the construction area, such as cabinets, bushes, pool tables, etc.
Install and maintain a company job sign in the front of the job.
Maintain a clean job site as seen from the street.
Remove large quantities of debris on a weekly basis or as needed.
Never use a client's property or tools.
All tasks assigned by Project Manager include but are not limited to:
Cleaning site – materials stacked neatly, floors cleaned, tools put away, yard cleaned, trash piled neatly, mud off driveway and roads
Moving lumber
Installing dust protection before work begins & maintaining it
Tool setup and break down each day
Taking part in all training opportunities
Learning by watching, asking questions and participating in the work
Carpentry Labor
Know and understand all plans and specifications.
Get answers to questions when plans and specifications are unclear.
Complete all work related to carpentry and other work generally done by this company such as:
Framing
Exterior trim
Installation of windows and doors
Installation of siding of all varieties
Installation of interior doors
Installation of interior trim of all varieties
Installation of cabinets
Installation and hookup of appliances
Have all the tools required for proper installation of the above-mentioned tasks.
Supervise all work done by other employees to ensure compliance of company standards and specifications.
Supervision and Scheduling of Subcontractors
As directed by the Project Manager
Be prepared for the subcontractor on the day they are scheduled.
Either clean up or ensure that the subs clean up.
Inspections
Except if directed by the Project Manager, be onsite when the inspector(s) arrive, accompany them and deal with issues that arise.
Stay as current as possible on codes that affect your work.
Material Management
Assist the Team in ordering the proper amount of materials to ensure that trips to the hardware store and lumberyard during the project are limited to once every two weeks.
With direction from the Project Manager, receive material deliveries, sign receipts and check to ensure proper quantities and quality.
With direction from the Project Manager, return undamaged materials that cannot be used at the first available time.
Store materials in a way that reduces the possibility of damage after they are delivered to the site.
